Committed to fighting breast cancer, celebrities Téa Leoni, Farah Fath ("Days of Our Lives") and Kathy Smith (fitness expert) laced up their hiking boots and joined some 750 hikers to celebrate the 10th Annual Expedition Inspiration Take-A-Hike at Paramount Ranch in the scenic Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area in Agoura, California on October 15. The celebrity-led hikes were geared to adults and children of all ages and fitness levels with beginning, intermediate and advance hikes. Mother Nature provided a gorgeous day and perfect weather for the cause. Cancer survivors and supporters also enjoyed live musical entertainment, a silent auction and an array of delicious food. Robb Weller, host of Fox 11's "Good Day LA Weekend," served as Master of Ceremonies for the opening ceremonies. Honorary Chairs included Cindy Crawford, Richard Roundtree and Jeanne Tripplehorn.
The event raised $100,000 to benefit the Expedition Inspiration Fund for Breast Cancer Research, and the Revlon/UCLA and USC/Norris Lee breast centers, through UCLA's Jonsson and the USC/Norris Comprehensive Cancer Centers. According to the American Cancer Society, over 200,000 women were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004, and one in seven women will develop breast cancer during their lifetime.
"Take-A-Hike is one of the most intimate and down-to-earth fundraising events in town," said Co-chair Brenda Himelfarb. "It's a family-oriented event where people get to hike shoulder-to-shoulder with celebrities and enjoy great camaraderie. This anniversary celebration marked a special milestone for the hike."
In addition to hiking the picturesque santa Monica mountains, a silent auction beckoned bidders looking for travel, restaurant and entertainment packages, and booths offered information about breast cancer prevention, excercise and nutrition. A special "Ask-A-Doctor" booth featured leading breast cancer specialists from UCLA and USC who answered individual questions about the disease, its diagnosis and treatment.
Held in conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Take-A-Hike is designed to raise awareness about the disease and to pay tribute to those who have fought, or are still fighting breast cancer. Event sponsors included Talia and Tom Block and Family, Divine Invention, Bob and Riva Fredrick, Gayot Publications, Guess?, Healthwise, Orly, Privé, The North Face, and Wood Investments. In-kind contributors included Gelson's, La Brea Bakery, New York Bagel Company, RFK, Sundia, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Vulvic, and Wild Oats.
Expedition Inspiration was founded in 1993 by breast cancer survivor, Laura Evans to raise awareness and research funds, as well as educate and support those affected by the disease. Through treks, hikes and other outdoor activities, the fund has donated over $2 million to the cause. Expedition Inspiration also promotes the physical and mental well being of breast cancer survivors. Since its inception, Expedition Inspiration has been instrumental in helping to call attention to the breast cancer epidemic and the urgent need to find a cure.
