HIKERS BRAVE COOL TEMPS TO PARTICIPATE IN EXPEDITION INSPIRATION’S SIXTH ANNUAL NEW HAMPSHIRE TAKE-A-HIKE SUNDAY, OCTOBER 11, 2009 at MT. MAJOR
Event Raises Nearly $20,000 for Breast Cancer Research at The Norris Cotton Cancer Center and to Benefit The Expedition Inspiration Fund
A beautiful, but crisp fall morning greeted 140 hikers of all ages and fitness levels, as they hit the trail for Expedition Inspiration’s Sixth Annual New Hampshire Take-A-Hike, held at Mt. Major, near Alton Bay on Sunday, October 11, 2009. The event offered beginning, intermediate and advanced trails, rewarding hikers with spectacular fall views, from the mountain summit, of Lake Winnipesaukee and surrounding lakes, waterways, and mountains.
The Hike raised funds for cutting-edge breast cancer research under the direction of Dr. Peter A. Kaufman, Associate Professor of Medicine (Hematology/Oncology) at The Norris Cotton Cancer Center in affiliation with The Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and Expedition Inspiration.
Hikers took part in a fun raffle featuring products and services donated by businesses from all over New England, as well as an amazing vacation package to world famous Sun Valley Resort in Idaho! Informational materials were provided regarding research at Norris Cotton Cancer Center, services provided by The Friends of Norris Cotton Cancer Center and programs funded by Expedition Inspiration. Melissa Waterhouse, New Hampshire Take-A-Hike Chair welcomed hikers. Mary Yeo, Team Member on Expedition Inspiration’s Mt. Aconcagua Climb in 1995, spoke to the hikers about her history with the organization and why she still “climbs for a cure”. Following Yeo’s inspiring words, the hikers participated in Expedition Inspiration’s Tribute Flag Ceremony, honoring those for whom they were hiking. Lisa Densmore, Hanover based author and PBS series producer, led hikers in their warm-up and the hike began!
The New Hampshire Take-A-Hike, held in conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, is structured to raise awareness about the disease and to pay tribute to those who have fought, or are still fighting breast cancer. The Expedition Inspiration Fund for Breast Cancer Research was founded in 1993 by breast cancer survivor, Laura Evans to raise awareness and research funds, as well as educate and support those affected by the disease. Through treks, hikes and other outdoor activities, the Fund has raised nearly $3 million towards research, education and awareness.
