Mt Rainier
Expedition Inspiration's 2003 Mt Rainier team enjoyed a beautiful and rewarding experience this summer. Teammembers Julie Goodale of Stony Point, NY, Kelly Herrington from Schenectady, NY, and Eve Ruff, Seattle, all reached the 14,411 summit of this gem. Kristi Frambach of Seattle and Cathy Pierce from Issaquah, WA were thrilled to climb to the Ingraham Flats at 11,200 feet. Congratulations to all of our team members and especially to Julie and Cathy, breastcancer survivors.

Kristi wrote after her experience... "Why do people climb mountains? ...mountains make us the strongest, focused and most inspired of people... Mountains show us that we are survivors. They show us our hearts and souls and in that intimate viewing, we see who we were meant to be! Perhaps Laura Evansunderstood that best of all...she suggested we climb a mountain to find a cure for breast cancer...and she suggested to all of us that we become the very best we could ever be in doing that! Expedition Inspiration inspires us all to climb to the summit of our lives...and oh...the view is breathtaking!"

Gayot's Generosity
For the past seven years, Gayot Publications has been a Los Angeles Take-A-Hike sponsor. In the beginning, this leader in professional restaurant reviews and up-to-the-date travel information, donated its guide books for the goodie bags along with various restaurant gift certificates that were given as prizes for top fundraisers. And when the silent auction was added to the festivities, Alain Gayot, Editor-in-Chief, was the first to come on board.

"If it hadn't been for Alain," says Sarah Korda, Silent Auction Chair, "I don't think we would have even been able to have an auction."

Each year, in addition to donating books, Gayot personally writes hundreds of letters to restaurants and hotels asking them to donate to the event. And gayot.com's database enables worldwide access to more than 17,000 restaurant reviews from 66 cities aroundthe world! So, needless to say, thousands of dollars have beenraised for Expedition Inspiration's LA Take-A-Hike because of Alain's generosity.

Five years ago, Alain's mother had breast cancer. "The hike, of course, became much more personal," says Gayot. "Each year I want to do even more." And each year Expedition Inspiration sings him praises. Thank you, Alain. Thank you.

8th Annual LATake-A-Hike

Kathy Smith and
B.J. Dockweiler, Chair
The Eighth Annual EITake-A-Hike began with introductions by B.J. Dockweiler, who has chaired the event five times. Breast cancer survivors, Nancy Knoble, Expedition Inspiration Board Member and EI Advisory Board Member, Karyn Blackmore-Hagy, gave messages of inspiration and hope. Both women spoke of their journeys of survival. Knoble also spoke of how Expedition Inspiration wasconceived as a tribute to the courage and determination of breast cancer survivors and memories of the thousands of lives cut short by the disease.

Honorary Chair, actress Téa Leoni, along with actress Jeanne Tripplehorn, fitness guru Kathy Smith, and actress Kim Raver, led the 1000 hikers through a warm-up before they all hit the trails.

The music provided by Unkle Monkey and The Tim Peterson Singers had the tired hikers dancing in the aisles. There was fabulous food and drink for all as well as an incredible silent auction with more than 150 items put together by auction chair Sarah Korda, who worked endless hours to make this the best auction yet!

Many thanks to our generous sponsors Gayot Publications, The NorthFace, Whole Foods Market, Orly International, Phoenix Software, Guess?, Accusplit, Aspen Travel, Wood Investments, Shorewood Realtors, Glaceau Vitamin Water, Talia & Tom Block & Family, KPMG, Zero Minus Plus, Union Bank of CA, Frank Stiefel, and allGoodOrganics.

And a GREAT BIG congratulations and thank you to the top fundraiser Teri Roseman!

The hike raised over $150,000 for Dr. Michael Press' breast cancer research at the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center.
