The Expedition Inspiration Fund for Breast Cancer Research is pleased to announce the Laura Evans Memorial Breast Cancer Symposium, to be held March 9th- 12th, 2016 in Sun Valley, Idaho. Breast cancer research scientists from around the nation will attend the Symposium titled, “The Tumor Macro and Micro Environments and Breast Cancer Progression”. This internationally renowned meeting will be chaired by Expedition Inspiration Scientific Advisor, Marc Lippman, MD, PhD, known in scientific circles as one of the country’s leading authorities in the field of breast cancer research.
Dr. Angie DeMichele, Medical Advisory Committee member to Expedition Inspiration says of the collaboration that takes place during the Symposium, “There is vital representation across the spectrum of clinical investigators, (who work in their own little silos), laboratory researchers, and community oncologists. During the symposium, the collaborations really do happen, and they continue outside of the symposium venue.”
In service to the community where the organization was founded, Expedition Inspiration will once again host a FREE to the community Open Forum, held in conjunction with the Symposium. The topic for this year's event is "The Role of the Woman's Body in the Progression and Treatment of Breast Cancer." The Open Forum is open to anyone interested in learning about the latest in cancer research and treatments. The Open Forum will take place Thursday, March 10, in the Continental Room of the Sun Valley Inn from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. Dr. Marc Lippman from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine will moderate the evening. Featured speakers include Dr. Theresa Guise from Indiana University, Dr. Firdaus Dhabar from Stanford School of Medicine and Dr. Thea Tlsty from University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine who all influential members of the breast cancer research community. The Open Forum will also be live streamed on our YouTube Channel: BreastCancerEI, "2016 Breast Cancer Open Forum."
Each 2016 Symposium participant will offer insight into their area of expertise followed by a “question and answer” session, where community attendees can ask questions of these renowned medical experts. A rare opportunity to learn from the top researchers in the world, commonly discussed topics include targeted therapies, clinical trials, treatment updates, alternative therapies, estrogen replacement and proactive measures.
Expedition Inspiration will also present its 2016 Young Investigator Award recipient at the Open Forum. Dr. Neil Iyengar, PhD, recipient of Expedition Inspiration’s Brenda M. Williams Young Investigator Award for Breast Cancer Research, conducts his research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. Dr. Iyengar studies breast cancer and the metabolic syndrome, which is a group of disorders including obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and fasting hyperglycemia, and the associated worsening outcomes for patients with breast cancer. He will present about the research project that Expedition Inspiration is supporting.
